When my daughter turned 18, she wanted a tattoo. Some people in my age group (over 40) dislike tattoos and piercings, but body art is just another form of expression. So when we went to Waikiki for the first time, we all got tattoos--yes, even me! I felt bold and creative! I got a small custom-made plumeria placed above the inside of my right ankle to commemorate my first trip to Hawaii. Small and innocuous, but colorful--pink, yellow, green, my tattoo became a quiet, yet defining moment of my middle age.
More and more I see women in their forties and fifties sporting tattoos on their ankles, feet, or other not-so-obvious places. They are usually tastefully done, artistic and obviously a form of creative expression that our society seems to accept without judgment.
